Eti-Osa Lawyers’ Forum Issues a Strong Statement to the IGP, Seeks Justice for Kayode Bakare Following Police Killing.

In a relentless pursuit of justice and community welfare, the Eti-Osa Lawyers’ Forum continues to champion the cause of the people it serves. Undeterred by challenges, the Forum has once again stepped forward to address a pressing matter that has gripped the hearts of residents within its jurisdiction.

As the watchful eyes of the legal fraternity keenly focus on their mission, the Forum has recently taken up the mantle to seek redress over the tragic killing of Kayode Bakare by the hands of law enforcement officers. In a move echoing our commitment to communal duties, the Forum has raised its voice to the highest echelons of authority, following up with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in a determined pursuit of justice.

Kayode Bakare was allegedly shot dead by a drunk police inspector, identified simply as Jonathan Kampani, at Quinox Hotel, in the Sangotedo area of the state.

Reported by the Punch Newspaper, the Vice Chairlady, Eti-Osa Lawyers’ Forum,  Abiye Tam -George, in a statement on Thursday, urged the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to forestall a recurrence of the incident.

The statement read in part, “Preliminary investigations point to the fact that the perpetrator fired gunshots at close range at the deceased. While other persons fled the scene in terror, friends and eyewitnesses tried to take the deceased to a nearby hospital in a vehicle. However, the perpetrator returned and again fired repeated gunshots. This made the friends and eyewitnesses abandon the vehicle with the deceased inside, to save their lives.

“A second attempt was made by eyewitnesses to evacuate the deceased to a nearby hospital, but he was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival. The police conducted an on-the-spot investigation and it was established that the erring policeman used his firearm unlawfully. As an organisation, we condemn in the strongest of terms the unruly behaviour of the officer.”
